mary & craig: wedding

Mary and Craig's wedding at Willow Glen was one of the nicest and most unique I have been to. It was an intimate, warm and heartfelt ceremony among family and friends.

Willow Glen has completely changed from when we last visited for Mary and Craig's engagement shoot. The grey winter feel was gone and in its place was green grass, some with red tips, and trees.

We stayed overnight in a lovely accommodation in Bathurst and when morning came,  Mary started her day with a trip to the local hairdresser.

After the curlers were taken out, Mary looked like this.

You should've seen Eric's face. It was written with shock and confusion. He was probably thinking "What the? I'm a guy and I know that is bad hair!" He was even more puzzled when the hairdresser pinned what looked like a bird nest into Mary's hair. It was for her neat looking bun of course. (Ok, not "of course" 'cos I didn't know either)

In the years that I've known Mary, I have never seen her with make up on. Now look at this gorgeous and elegant girl!

The wedding theme wass green.

Mary's simple and elegant Jo Durkin dress.

I really like this cool print hanging in one of the guest rooms.

Portrait of a lady.

At the farm, there were signs everywhere leading guests to the wedding.

Craig and the boys were hiding on a hill doing boy things i.e. having a beer. It looked like an invites only party but hey I'm the girl with a camera and camera equals all access right? =)

The ceremony was held on the hill over looking this beautiful view.

Tears were welling up in Craig's eyes as he watched the love of his life walk towards him.

I had picked out a couple of spots for their location shoot but the best spot was the one that I had only discovered right then and there. It was a hill that looked nothing out of the ordinary and I didn't care much for it at all the day before. But at that time, the sun was getting lower and it lit up the grass turning that hill into a field of gold. It was perfect.

Mary's vintage parasol combined with the golden grass conjured up an image of the Out of Africa poster. It's weird all the random stuff that's tucked away in my mind. I've never seen that movie nor do I have any interest in it but I must've flicked past in on the shelf at the DVD store before and all I remember was a vague picture of two people sitting in an open field.

This is my single most favourite image from this wedding.

Another one of my fav from location shoot.

I had an accident at this next location.

I got Mary and Craig to sit on a log. Click, click, click. My finger got busy and my face was planted to the camera. I took a couple of steps closer to Craig, not watching where I was going, and felt my left foot sank. It sank in something squishy. Cow dung...*SCREAM* (literally!)  It was massive. Fresh and massive and thank goodness I wore my hightop Converse that day. It was horrible but I wiped my shoe on the grass and kept going. Lucky I wasn't trying to lie down to get a low angle or anything =p

The shed was creatively transformed into the reception area.

Bonfire by the shed.

I wish I had blogged this a lot sooner when everything was fresh in my goldfish memory. I know I had a lot to say but perhaps it's all for the best because this post is already way too long! (OMG, I just had a geek moment. I was thinking my memory is like RAM)

Congratulations Mary & Craig on their wonderful wedding day =)
Here's the slideshow (better with sound).

Big, huge, extra large thank you to Eric for being my chauffeur, caddy and second shooter. I couldn't have done it without your support. It's awesome to have discovered a hidden talent in you and gosh you're a gem, you only charged me a car wash =)

mihaela & shehaan: wedding

Once again, I had the pleasure of being a part of the JSP team last Saturday for the wedding ceremony and location shoot of Mihaela and Shehaan.

My day started a bit differently and it involved packing my gear and hemming my new pants =p
The dryer shrinks everything so I bought a new pair of pants and had to take it up 10cm!! Seriously, don't the fashion industry understand that not everybody is big and tall? Some of us only grow sideways you know.

I seem to keep bumping into people I know at weddings as of late. Last time was while I was taking a group shot and this time was while the processional was happening. I was taking photos of bridesmaids coming down the aisle when I saw a familiar face through the viewfinder. I took the shot, checked the LCD and scratched my head (in my mind, not literally). I looked up and she smiled at me, confirming that I know her.

Now I know this first photo isn't for everybody but I kinda like that sense of the bride and her father appearing out of the light. If anyone happens to like it, let me know so I won't feel so abnormal =)

Mihaela's parents embracing their new son in law =)

Shehaan didn't smile very much during the ceremony. I later learnt that he was a little conscious of doing so as he thought he didn't have a nice smile. He couldn't be more wrong 'cos I think his smile is gorgeous!!

Nothing beats natural light in my opinion.

The girls.

Corina - the lovely bridesmaid that surprised me during procession.

I'm off to the farm wedding this weekend! The weather better be good! =)

warren & vera: wedding

Jenny Sun asked me to help her shoot what turned out to be the funnest wedding I've ever been to last weekend.

The day was filled with happiness and laughter. Vera, especially, is the bubbliest, smiliest, happiest and nicest girl! Seriously. I wonder if her cheeks got sore after the two days event =)

Look at that smile in the photo above. Warren is one lucky dude to have such a ball of sunshine to share his life with =)

These two really are so cute together.

Sure the bridal party look like they're capable of just sitting still and looking pretty...

But not for long =)

Girly moments.

Warren and Vera.

Warren's brother doing the penguin walk.

Boys just wanna have fun.

More of the love birds.

I quite like the cool tones of this one.

Jen set up the "photo booth" at the reception. It's quite popular among the US photographers. I was in charge of taking all the shots and while it was hectic at times, I had a blast doing it and I'm pretty sure the guests had lots of fun too. No photos to show here unfortunately as I shot it all on Jen's camera. Head over to her site to check out the fun photos though!

We all got to sit with the bridal party which was a huge surprise. It's such a rarity and only goes to show how unbelievably nice the bride and groom are.

There was no dancing at this reception but there were games!

Ding ding ding ding ding!

A great time was had by all.

Big congrats to Warren and Vera.

Gosh that was a long one. I know I need slideshow!!

celeste & vi: wedding - part 1

Wow, I can't believe it's been two weeks since I shot this. I'm trying to design an album at the same time you see, that's why this has been going slower than my usual speedy post wedding blogging. Anyway, thought I'd put up some bits and pieces now =)

I woke up to a gray sky that Friday. Overcast weather for outdoors ceremony? Awesome. I went about getting ready, packing my gear and having my breakfast - the luxury of an 11am start.

Only a week ago I was booked for this wedding. Vi met me at Gordon's studio but Celeste didn't come with him. As I was sitting in the car keeping warm ('cos I was early again), I saw a man which I guessed was the father of the bride and a young girl with curlers in her hair come out of the house. They were getting something out of their car. I thought I looked like a total stalker just sitting there in my car so I grabbed my stuff and went out to meet them.

"Hi. Celeste?" I said to the girl with curlers in her hair. She pointed to the house and told me Celeste was getting ready. Oh. That wasn't her.

I went inside and met the bride at last. Celeste was very relaxed as she was getting her hair and make up done.

I left the bride for a while to do some detail shots. Check out the invitation. It's pretty cute =)

During the prep, Celeste decided that she didn't like her nails and wanted them redone. I was really surprised at how calm she was! This is one cool lady. If I was the bride and  had do my nails at last minute I think I'd be so stressed out.

Time was coming close to when I was supposed to depart to go to the ceremony and Celeste was still not quite ready. We were running behind schedule but she still remained as calm as the ocean.

The ceremony was held at the Royal Botanic Gardens with a small gathering of family and friends. It was extremely bright and sunny. Whatever happened to my gray sky? I thought back to Gordon's sms that morning which said "Overcast is great for photos :)". I knoooow but it's gone! There was also big clouds floating above. The light was constantly changing as though the sun was a light bulb and there was a naughty kid flicking the switch on and off.

We wandered around the garden for location shoot. You could spend hours in there and we did which left us with only little time at the art gallery.

This backdrop of yellow flowers really caught my eye. There is a patch of dirt in front of it and so I asked Celeste to hold her dress up. The cheeky pose was all her =p

Now I know I posted this shot before but I redid the processing. I think I like this look better.

More photos to come in part 2 but there you have it, Natt - the official tog at last =)
So what cha think? Leave a comment!

Just beautiful!!!! (26 August 2008 22:21)

a wedding sneak peek

Haven't posted any photos for a while and the wedding from last Friday is going to take longer than usual to process since I'm still unpacking (gosh I'm slow) and working in a blindless study. That means I can only retouch properly at night when the sun is not streaming straight onto my screen...or I could hide in the bathroom but that's not so pleasant now is it? =p

Anyway, here's one of my fav. Stay tuned for more of this wedding.

I can't wait to see the rest.. ;) (15 August 2008 00:05)

julia & piotr: wedding

The groom is getting ready in a hotel? Yes! After one too many weddings with groom/bride prep in low light conditions, I was excited to be shooting in a hotel for a change. Hotel usually means big window, natural light and no clutter.

I wasn't schedule to show until 11:30am and the hotel wasn't far from my place which meant there was time for me to grab a very healthy brunch. A quarter pounder meal at Maccas. Think about it, it's got protein, dairy, carbs, vegetables (do pickels count?) right? =p

As usual, I was early so I sat in the lobby of the Stamford Grand Hotel at Ryde waiting for Gordon to arrive. Yep, Gordon Jovic was the man for this wedding and I had the pleasure of tagging along with him again.

Before I continue, I just wanted to make a note that all images in this post were taken for Gordon Jovic Photography and all rights are reseved for the studio.

Once Gordon and his lovely assistant Georgia arrived, we trekked down the long corridor to find the groom's room. Piotr's father showed us into the room and a few minutes later, Piotr and his groomsmen entered the room. Boy are they a good looking bunch!

The flower girl was cute as a button. We asked her to give Piotr a kiss.

But she had other ideas in mind =)

After that last shot, we headed over to the bride's house. Gordon was parking the car when I spotted one of the bridesmaid coming out. She had a nice red dress and a pretty bouquet and I thought to myself, the photos were going to look really good. That was until I went inside and saw the bride. Uh uh, the photos weren't going to look good. They were goign to look great!

Julia really blew me away. She was just stunning. Her face, her fair, her gown, her bouquet and her jewelery. Everything was just beautiful. She was perfect. I really wanted to say "Gosh you look gorgeous" but I feared looking like an idiot so instead I asked her where she got her dress from. I did, however, told Piotr that she looked gorgeous when I saw him at the church. Piotr is one lucky man indeed.

The time we had for the bridal prep was unfortunately way too short. I really wished we could've done a full bridal prep from makeup to hair and all the details.

The ceremony was held at St Peter Chanel of Futuna in Woolwich. I have shot here before with some friends around the ground but never went inside. It's a nice little church actually.

This shot of Julia peering out the car window is my best and most favourite image from this wedding. She looked like a princess.

As photographers, our eyes work a little differently. They wander and search. Often they are attracted to and see potential in things normal people don't. I think that was the case with the location shoot. For a Sydney wedding, you'd think the Rocks or Martin Place for location but Gordon took us to a very ordinary place full of cool graffiti. Awesome for photos but I wonder if the bridal party thought what the heck are we doing here. All I can say is, trust your photographer =)

This one is of course not in the streets =p

The second location was Balmain. I personally think Balmain has lots of cool spots. I should go and scout around the area some day. If only all the streets were twice the size and ain't packed with people and cars all the time =)

We spotted this cool wall just driving along the street. I guess that's where the traffic comes in handy then. It gave us time to sweep our eyes from side to side hehe.

That's the bestman that has stolen the bride for the shot. Did I say they're all very photogenic already?

Unfortunately I didn't stay for the reception but here is the last few shots.

Big thanks to Gordon Jovic for everything and especially for having faith in me.
I can see my drems slowly unfolding =)

nathaniel & sally-ann: wedding

Before I get to the details of this wedding I must say I'm feeling a little bit stupid about the last post but you know, that kind of emotions only come with something you're really passionate about. I'm thinking I should make it a policy to come home after a wedding and sleep it off before looking at any of the photos!

Nathaniel & Sally-Ann's wedding last Saturday is the third that I have shot. I was the second shooter for Jenny Sun and this time she put me in charge of the groom prep and group shots.

Jenny asked me to do the groom prep the day before while we were having lunch. This was unexpected and when she asked me to do it (and do it alone) I was nervous and part of me wanted to say no but heck I can't be scared all the time so I accepted the challenge anyway.

The ceremony was in the city and finding parking there is a real pain in the butt. Eric, the best hubbie in the universe, was worried for me and so he drove me to the groom's house, slept in the car while I did my thing and then dropped me off at the ceremony. I'm so grateful and to tell you the truth, it's nothing to do with the driving or parking but it's the emotional support. I just felt better having him with me while I mentally prepare myself.

Nat and groomsmen only just got up and were taking turn showering. The house was very dark as it was a winter morning so I opened up all the curtains in the living room to try and get more light in. I asked the guys to come and finish dressing in the living room once they have put their shirts and pants on (and I hope I didn't sound bossy!) and while I waited I took some shots of the rings.

The ceremony was held in the hall of Sydney Grammar School. After my previous experiences in dark churches, I was glad to see a well lit hall for a change. There was an upstairs where I could photograph the procession from the top. I always feel a little privileged as nobody else is allowed there but me hehe.

Like most ceremonies, there were speeches and singing. Everyone sang with such joy, especially the bride. Sally-Ann just looked so passionate. She would hold on to Nat's arm and while singing she would look up at him or rest her head on his shoulder with an expression that showed how deeply she loves him. At one stage, her eyes got teary and as I was standing in front of her, clicking away, I wished she didn't hold those tears in.

All the singing must've taken a lot out of Nat. Looks like he's checking if he's still got a pulse =)

After the ceremony was over. We did some family formals outside the hall and then headed to Hyde Park and the Rocks for location photos.

The reception was a cocktail held at Sydney Park Pavillion in Alexandria. Looking at the photos now, I totally regret not trying one of those gorgeous looking cupcakes. Check out the Cupcake Gallery (novelty cakes by Jo) for truly amazing cupcake decorations - a must see!

That was quite a few photos in one post. I really should look into doing one of those slideshow things. I hope you've enjoyed the photos and please let me know if you have any comments or critiques.

Beautiful work, Natt! :D It's great having a man in your life who will do anything to help out, aye? :P I totally understand! Kudos to Eric!

Awesome work, Natt... Really... You did such an amazing job! I love it! (08 July 2008 23:42)

These are so fantastic! YAY! (10 July 2008 06:57)

well done Natt! I'm so proud of you!!

As much as I love having you on board, I really don't think you need anymore experience from me (although don't take that as me not wanting you around! You are always welcome - but I think you do wonderfully on your own!).

I'll be replying your email soon :) I'm finally getting down to them today :)

Thanks for all your hard work at this wedding! (15 July 2008 22:12)

3rd shooter & 1st wedding

I finally got to try out a wedding for the first time. Last Saturday, I was being a third shooter for the talented Jenny Sun. It was quite an experience and definitely a lot harder than I imagined it to be. We are talking early mornings, long hours, hard work, lots of folks (duh) and busy busyness!

Somebody asked if I wanted to give up after experiencing it for the first time. Give up? Never. It's not easy but I do think it's very enjoyable and is a rewarding career. All I can say is Jenny is very lucky to be able to do what she does for a living (and btw it isn't luck, she is very talented!) and hopefully I can get there some day too...one can hope.

The wedding itself was a Chinese wedding for Julie and William. They are such great people and I feel so glad that my first time was with such a lovely couple. In fact it wasn't just the couple but Jenny and Gordon (who was the second shooter) and the videographers from Moudanie Studios. It was great to be able to have a laugh with them all which really makes the day less stressful. (Yeah ok I'm the third shooter so not that much stress from my end hehe).

I had a pretty good time doing this but ok enough talk. Here are the photos:
